RTB as it looked in the “old days.”

3 1/2 years ago I had a dream. I had been doing CrossFit for several years and, as relationships go, things were getting pretty serious. I had been an active member of several other CrossFit gyms over the years and fitness was a big part of my life. Eventually I built out a garage gym and was working out with and training others. I tested for and passed my CrossFit Level 1 exam. Then an opportunity presented itself. A gym full of equipment, 40 eager athletes, and a dream. I wasn’t really prepared, but I did it anyway. The days were crazy. Up at 4 a.m. to coach a 5 and 6 a.m. class, an hour commute to Boise for a day job from 9-4, then back to coach the evening classes from about 5-7:30 and then a part-time freelance job in the evenings as a communications consultant and web designer.

Fortunately, I had amazing support system in my partners, Kenneth and Nikki, coaches Anne and Presi Solis and Kathy Olsen who handled classes a couple of early mornings and evenings a week and kept RTB in order in the earliest of our days. I don’t think Raise the Bar CrossFit would have even gotten off the ground if it weren’t for their support and flexibility!

Community through Fitness

About six months into our journey, a young couple named Leslie and Henry walked in. I had purchased the gym from their former coach. When he moved away and I bought the gym, they decided to become “garage CrossFitters.” They had already obtained their Level 1 training certificates and were interested in coaching. They needed a place to do the CrossFit Open workouts. Of course, the RTB community welcomed them with open arms! Within a few weeks, they were members again. Within a few weeks after that, Leslie was asking about coaching opportunities. She started first as a part-time coach. Leslie was full of grit and go-get-em. She lost 35 pounds as she grew in her role as a coach and athlete. During this time, she eventually came on as a full-time coach, then as a head coach leading the charge. She literally started with coaching two hours a week and she was soooo shy! Not anymore!

And now, Leslie and Henry are in the process of becoming the new owners of RTB!

Leslie has sat with me over calendars and planning documents and brainstormed with me and worked to make our athletes and our coaches happier and better. I can’t even begin to explain how much time we have spent together working to make RTB great. Late nights, early mornings, meetings squeezed between class times, trainings on how to use the floor scrubber, how to use the gym software, how to greet our awesome athletes, how to do the Burgener warmup, adapting to changes in programming, how to modify or scale workouts, and how to smile even when you walk in and it’s 45-degrees in the gym at 5 a.m. and you are there to make it the best part of someone else’s day.

RTB is a place for friends

But then there’s the other stuff. A great coach never has to be trained on how to get excited over a back squat PR, or someone’s first pullup or pushup, or the fact that a client can finally squat below parallel or has given up smoking because of this “CrossFit thing.” Leslie is one of those great coaches who didn’t have to be trained on that stuff.

I was sad for a few weeks because so much of me was wrapped up in the identity of Raise the Bar, but now…I am truly excited! I am excited to see this gym led by someone that I actually look up to as a coach. Many of you know that I have been doing freelance web design work for several years and that career and my business, For Time Design, has exploded. I serve CrossFit gyms around the world and am now expanding my business into the local community. I simply did not feel that I had the time to adequately serve both businesses as an owner and still take care of my family. But I am not going anywhere. I will still be coaching at RTB and see this transition as an awesome thing and I am so happy to see that so many of you do, as well.

For those who have never been to RTB, I encourage you to come check it out. Leslie might be at the helm now, but we have an amazing staff of dedicated and caring coaches ready to help you meet your goals and we look forward to expanding that team and our offerings. We believe in safe training, continuing education, passionate coaches, and a supportive community. Over the coming weeks, we will introduce you to our members and our coaches and show you how we can help you reach that next level too! When you’re ready to get started, we’d love to meet you.
